What is a Tefillin?

INK + PARCHMENT + LEATHER

Tefillin, often referred to as phylacteries, are a set of small, black leather boxes containing Torah scrolls. These scrolls are inscribed with specific biblical verses, including passages from the Shema, written by a skilled scribe using ink and quill. Tefillin are worn by Jewish men during weekday morning prayers as a reminder of G-d’s unity and the commandments.

The Tefillin consist of two parts: one worn on the arm, wrapped with leather straps, and the other placed on the forehead. These two boxes contain the same sacred texts, which symbolize G-d’s presence and our connection to His mitzvot. Wearing Tefillin deepens spiritual mindfulness, as they physically bind the wearer to their faith, reinforcing the importance of remembering G-d's commandments throughout daily life. The act of donning Tefillin is a personal expression of devotion, aligning the body and soul in an intimate connection to divine will.

Strengthen your connection

Embrace the Divine presence and protect your soul with the mitzvah of Tefillin.

In a world filled with uncertainty, we all seek ways to fortify ourselves and our loved ones with a sense of protection and spiritual strength. The Tefillin offers an eternal reminder of the Divine's presence, serving as a powerful shield in these challenging times. Wearing Tefillin connects us to G-d’s commandments, enveloping us in His guidance and protection, and reminding us of His constant care.

Project Shield is an initiative designed to inspire and protect. In partnership with Mitzvah Society, Project Shield encourages you to embrace the mitzvah of Tefillin, either by wearing them personally or sharing their profound message with others. Let the Tefillin be a symbol of strength and spiritual fortitude in your daily life.

Participate in Project Shield in these ways:

  • Begin your day by donning Tefillin, and allow their sacred connection to strengthen your faith and focus.

  • Check your Tefillin for wear and ensure they are still in proper condition to fulfill the mitzvah.

  • Share the power of Tefillin by encouraging others to wear them or gifting a set to someone in need.

Project Shield has been made possible by an anonymous sponsor. Learn more about Mitzvah Society at mitzvahsociety.org.
